I specifically remember thinking, you mean there’s more than just JPEGs? And then I sat down and tried to finesse a new RAW file—and I was hooked. Shooting in JPEG is the equivalent of sending your film in for development, while shooting in RAW is like developing your own film, fine turning the contrast, perfecting the exposure yourself. RAW files are digital “negatives” that offer much more control over the post processing than the familiar JPEGs. When you open a RAW file in Photoshop, for example, you begin fine tuning the file before it even fully opens in the program. Ready to have even more control over your images? Here’s how to take advantage of RAW. Shooting in Raw. Shooting in RAW is actually fairly simple. First, you need to change the file type. This feature is usually located in the same spot you would use for adjusting if you want a basic JPEG or a fine JPEG. On the Nikon D3. 30. There are several programs that will edit RAW, but first, we’ll go over the most popular option, Photoshop. When you open a RAW file in Photoshop, you don’t head right to the Photoshop you are familiar with. In a JPEG, the camera does some of the processing for you, but in a RAW file, you do all of the processing, allowing more control over the final image. Since the RAW file hasn’t been processed like a JPEG, when you open a RAW in Photoshop, you get a screen that looks like this: At the very top, Photoshop’s Camera RAW window offers tools for cropping, zooming, straighteningand retouches like red eye reduction and spot removal. At the right, you’ll see the histogram and image details, under that is several different tabs, followed by a menu for whatever tab you have selected. The first tab that is displayed is Basic, the default option (pictured above). This is one of the most useful tabs, so let’s spend some time here. Programs Like Camera Raw SoftwareIf you didn’t quite get it right as you shot, you can adjust it to the different options your camera has, like daylight or tungsten. The dropper tool at the top left can be used to select an element of the image that should be white, and adjust the rest of the image accordingly. Underneath that are two sliders, one for temperature and tint. These options are great for images that aren’t as warm or cool as you’d like, try adjusting the slider to add more orange (warm) or blue (cool). As you move the slider, the image will update, so you can visualize the changes and adjust accordingly. The next group of sliders adjusts exposure. The top slider will adjust the overall exposure, while underneath there are options for enhancing the blacks, adding more contrast and even adding a little fill light. Again, using these sliders adjusts the image as you work, so experiment with them until you get the look you want. The final set of sliders on the basic tab adjusts clarity, vibrance and saturation. Use these sliders for adding or subtracting the amount of color in the image. The basic tab option is the one you’ll use most, but there’s a few other options that even beginners should take note of. One, is the sharpening option. This tab looks like a two triangles, one sharp and one blurry. Different sliders here allow you to increase or decrease the sharpness and noise in the image. When working to sharpen an image, use the zoom tool in the upper- left so you can preview the effect better. I used a f. 1. 8 aperture in this portrait, so I ended up sharpening the RAW file quite a bit to make sure his face was nice and sharp: Depending on the shot, you may want to use some of the other options within the Camera RAW tab. In the tone curve panel, you can fine tune the highlights, lights and darks even farther. As you move the slider, watch both your image and how the histogram changes with your adjustments. Once you’ve gone through the Camera RAW options and are happy with the image, you can click open image to make further adjustments using Photoshop, just as you would with a JPEG file. Often, the RAW editing offers the tweaks you want, but some advanced effects are completed in the regular Photoshop window. Free RAW editing software. Cameras that are equipped to shoot RAW usually also include the software to edit them. If you don’t own Photoshop and are looking for a free editing program for RAW images, the first place to look is from the manufacturer that made your camera. Check their website to make sure you are getting the latest version. Programs like Picasa are also able to handle RAW files, as well as programs like UFRaw. Shooting in manual modes is the first step to having control over your images; Shooting in RAW is the next step. Consider a JPEG like the automated modes on the camera and a RAW file as full manual mode. JPEGs are fine, and may be even preferred when shooting action since RAW means slower processing times, but RAW offers more creative control over your post- processing.
